Puget Sound Transportation Projects

My thoughts on transportation in the Puget Sound area and transportation issues in general.

From WSDOT:

The new Eastbound Nalley Valley Viaduct has opened to traffic early.

After lowering the water level around the machine, a metal pipe was found stuck in it. This is a pipe from an earlier sampling well.

Hopefully this is all there is blocking the machine.

Many cities in the South Sound received money to work on trail systems in their city.

On January 3rd, WSDOT will redirect traffic from the temporary to the new Nalley Valley Viaduct on SR 16.

This is great news. This project has been long in coming.

WSDOT is planning to add solar powered LED line markers on Snoqualmie Pass.

These will be great if it works. It is so hard to see the standard white lane markers in heavy rain, or snow.

From The Seattle Times:

There is so much freight on the BNSF tracks used by Amtrak’s Empire Builder that it is being constantly delayed. Much of this is due to oil coming out of North Dakota.

Sounds like it’s time to expand the line.

Post from WSDOT discusses the truck fire and shutdown of Interstate 5 near Mounts Road, breaking down the entire incident.

WSDOT is launching a new tool that will tell you the number of available spaces at a particular terminal for a particular sailing.

This is a great new tool for those who use the ferry system.

From The News Tribune:
http://www.thenewstribune.com/2013/12/16/2950849/fife-seeks-to-ban-big-rigs-on.html

Fife is looking to ba big rigs on the Milroy Bridge, an older steel bridge across the Puyallup River. It is narrow and ends at a stop light, so it isn’t really designed for trucks.

From WSDOT:
http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/News/2013/12/13_Tunnel_Crews_Look.htm

Crews are drilling wells to lower groundwater around where the SR 99/Alaskan Way tunneling machine Bertha is stuck.

Let’s hope we find the obstruction and a solution soon.
