Puget Sound Transportation Projects

My thoughts on transportation in the Puget Sound area and transportation issues in general.

The tunnel boring machine named Bertha used for the SR 99/Alaskan Way tunnel has been stopped by an obstruction. Work is underway to determine what this obstruction is.

Construction of two new Interstate 5 bridges across the Puyallup River has been delayed by concerns raised by the Puyallup tribe.

It is important to move this project along; however it is also important to do it right. Let’s hope we reach a consensus soon.

Lots of work is coming in January to switch traffic over to the new bridge on the SR 16/Nalley Valley Viaduct.

An art project inspired by Paris has come to the Tacoma Sounder extension. People can attach their own “love locks” to the supports of the Sounder bridge in Downtown Tacoma.

Sound Transit says that University Link is below budget and ahead of schedule. They plan to open the line 6 to 9 months early – in early 2016.

This is great news. With a stop in Capitol Hill, one of the most densely populated districts in Seattle, the line should get great ridership.

A “coffer cell”, effectively a portable dry dock, has arrived on Lake Washington. It will be used to fix cracks in the current SR 520 pontoons.

The preferred alternative has been picked to extend light rail from Northgate to Lynnwood. The route will mostly follow Interstate 5.

Given how many commuters come into the city from the North end, this is a good thing.

A new Southbound auxiliary lane from Thorne Lane to Berkley Street will open right before Thanksgiving.

This lane should help with the horrible congestion in this area.

The Washington State Ferry system is working towards using Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) as a fuel source. This would be implemented on the Issaquah class ferries.

More information is available here: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Ferries/Environment/LNG.htm
